I can honestly say that I have met some of the best people that I could ever have hoped to meet in Detroit. They are courageous and kind. They don’t take “no” for an answer and they have a strength that few have in this world. They are caring and tenacious. There are a lot of things I love about this city — the history, the sports, the cars, the music —, but above all, I really love the people.

lindsayblairbrown:

This morning I had a meeting at work. It was productive, efficient, and team-building. There was a point during this meeting, however, when I experienced a strange wave of self-awareness. It was odd, but as I sat there I felt very much like a visitor. I began wondering what this meeting would look…

“Our intention is not that somebody point the finger and say, ‘Man, Detroit’s really got problems.’ If that’s what happens, then we’ve failed at our job,” Ewing said this week. “We want people to say, ‘Man, that’s happening in my city, too. How did we let it go this far? What is our American identity when we’ve allowed a city to come to this point? And what are our priorities?’

”Detroit must be helped. It must be propped up. It must be encouraged. You want the audience to walk away with the feelings of pride in Detroit. That’s a lot to accomplish in a film, but you can always hope.”

Jim Schaefer and John Gallagher write in today’s Free Press about the increasing amount of positive press being given to the city of Detroit by national media outlets. Could the tide be permanently turning finally?

Yes, the narrative seems to be changing. Those outside of Detroit are finally starting to come around and realize what many of us already knew.

But, here’s where the biggest challenge begins, at least I think so. Because, for so long Detroit has been the underdog, the hopeless city, the forgotten town that always had to prove itself.

Now that we’ve finally gotten the attention we deserve, we can’t simply declare victory because we’re nowhere near the finish line. Truth is, there’s a lot of work that still needs to be done. There’s still unemployment, there’s still a failing public school system, and Detroit’s population is still not where it should be.

But at least now, the rest of the country, and maybe even the world is watching, and maybe now they’re more willing and eager to root us on than tear us down.

And what sparked this latest wave of affection from afar? Growing signs of a rebound. And the same thing that so often draws the national spotlight: our sports teams. With an almost perfect storm of success, the undefeated Lions, the Yankee-killing Tigers and winning seasons for our two big college football teams are once again driving the deconstruction, reconstruction, explanations and excuses of an underdog town.

Check out some of the coverage the D has received recently:

I have this crazy idea about the Detroit train station. It’s a serious conundrum in Michigan. How in the hell can you financially justify redevelopment yet at the same time how in the hell could you stomach demolishing such an incredibly iconic structure. Here’s my harebrained idea: Preserve it as this country’s most incredibly work of public art. An immense sculpture that will stand tall among the rebirth of a city that once died. A testament to the resiliency of cities, of communities. A crew of curators could keep it preserved, turning ruin porn on its head and giving a giant fuck you to those that used its decrepit image to advertise the past hemorrhaging of Detroit. Let it be as beautiful as it is. Embrace it.

Man, I’m fired up.

Red Wings have Tiger fever

Detroit Red Wings goaltender and New York state native Jimmy Howard has his priorities straight, or as he puts it, he’s “politically correct.” So when the Detroit Tigers — incidentally owned by Mike Ilitch, who also owns the Wings — take on the New York Yankees tonight, Howard knows for whom he’ll be rooting.

“All my buddies growing up were Yankees fans, so they’re all pumped up,” Howard said, laughing, “but my loyalty is to my boss.”

Justin Abdelkader, who is from Muskegon, called the playoff series “exciting because, being from Michigan, I know how into the Tigers the fan base is, and it’s good to see them make the playoffs, win their division. I think everyone believes they have a really good shot against the Yankees.

“I’m picking them to win. I think they can hit with the best of the teams. You combine hitting with pitching, and it can turn into something special.”

The only problem Abdelkader has is with some European teammates, such as Jakub Kindl, who just don’t get it.

“Kindl is pretty clueless when it comes to baseball,” Abdelkader said, smiling. “I don’t think he understands the rules. He thinks it’s a pretty slow sport, but I explained to him that soccer is just as slow as baseball, so I don’t know what he’s talking about. And actually, there are a lot more runs scored in baseball, so it’s a lot more fun to watch.”

Swedes appear to be bigger converts. Johan Franzen, at least, is a fan. “My first or second year here, they were really good, so we watched some really exciting games, and I got hooked then,” he said.

Drew Miller, who grew up in Lansing and went to Michigan State, expects a good battle.

“I think the Tigers take it. Having the same ownership, it’s big for our team and our organization. It’s good to see that. And then you see the Lions — it’s good for the whole state and definitely the city of Detroit. Everyone is happy and excited about all of our sports right now.”

General manager Ken Holland, a self-described “huge baseball fan,” said that if the camera catches him watching TV in the Joe Louis Arena press box during tonight’s exhibition against the Toronto Maple Leafs, “it won’t be the hockey game I’m watching.”

Dear FSD, put a camera on Kenny so we can see him cheering for the Tigers.

I always love seeing the camaraderie and support between our sports teams. The humility and respect that Detroit’s professional athletes regularly show to each other, to their teammates, to the coaches and management, to opponents, and to the fans is really unparalleled. It says so much about our city and the people here. I am so proud to be from a place where how you treat the people around you matters.

It starts tonight.
